Travel photographer of the year

Well, the results are out, and as always the standards are exceptionally high. Thousands of entries from dozens of countries whittled down to this illustrious selection. It’s got to be tough judging in in this competition.

The winner this year is Akash from Bangladesh. His portfolios impressed the judges because of his use of movement and understanding of light, combined with great visual storytelling. This is my favourite image, from his entries – definitely the one I wish I could claim as my own! I love the expresssion on her face, the movement of the landscape below the train, and the ‘Indianness’ of the capture.

Speaking of India, the perennial photographer’s favourite featured strongly throughout all the categories. And deservedly so, it is one of the most colourful and vibrant places on planet.

Another portfolio that captured my attention was the runner-up in the Natural Wonders category – Daisy Gilardini. Her animal portraits are simply stunning, and show such a skillful and intelligent use of a monochrome subject in a monochrome landscape.
